Even though Zastava first began assembling 162 Jeep Willys in 1953, serious manufacturing of this type military vehicle commenced 3 months later with the acquisition of a licensing agreement from Fiat to manufacture its Campagnola known as the Fiat 1101 model.  Zastava models were named AR-51, AR-55. AR-59. etcetera meaning Automezzo da Ricognizione plus the year of first manufacture.  Therefore, this specimen from 1971 was first built commencing in 1955.  The straight-4 ohv engine, currently primarily operating on propane, is a 1901cc version boasting 53-63 hp.  It can run in 2 wheel rear drive or 4 wheel drive and it has a locking differential, plus it has an ultra low gear option to crawl about the countryside with surefooted steadfastness.  It weighs 1,300 kg, can carry 500 kg, and tow another 800 kg.  This soldier served as a telecommunications unit.  As part of its light restoration and upgrade to a more muscular military presence, our team tried to purchase the telecom equipment and desk that was featured in the back space; however, they were rebuffed by the army dumping ground personnel to preserve military technological secrets.  It is so much to fun to drive, though not really suited for regular and long term street driving, it is best suited off-road in the fields and forests while reminiscing on mandatory army service required of every able bodied man during its heyday.
